Working through a tax concern with the Department of Revenue doesn’t have to be a scary experience. We really don’t have any Freddie Krueger wannabes (from A Nightmare on Elm Street) on staff. Really.

We do know that a tax issue can be intimidating, especially if you only deal with your taxes once a year. But many state tax issues and questions can be dealt with smoothly and conveniently, either by telephone or via our website. For instance, you can check the status of your state tax refund or change your mailing address online 24/7.

But should there come a time when you need to visit us in person, please know that we want to help you. And we know your time is valuable. So, when you’re planning a trip to the ol’ DOR, be sure to follow these tips to make your visit as smooth and speedy as possible:

  • Bring a current government-issued photo ID (sorry, your yearbook picture doesn’t count).
  • If you’re dealing with a payment discrepancy, bring a copy (front and back) of the cancelled check in question. That way we’ll be able to determine to which account that payment was applied.
  • Bring all correspondence and other paperwork associated with your issue, including any bill you may have received, copy of the tax return(s) in question, missing W-2 forms, etc.
  • Have your Social Security number with you. If you’re representing a business, make sure to bring the business’s Taxpayer Identification (TID) and location number with you as well.
  • Be prepared to leave your contact phone number and current address, in case we need to do some follow-up.
  • If you are planning to represent someone, make sure to bring a properly completed Power of Attorney form with you.

To find out which district office is closest to you, check out the list. We have 12 offices throughout the state. The list includes locations and phone numbers. Except for holidays, all offices are open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday – Friday.
