Are you now approaching the tax filing deadline only to realize you’re not quite ready to file? Regardless of the reasons why you haven’t filed, and some are very legitimate, one fact remains: if you owe tax, and you can’t file by the April 15 due date this year, you’ll need to file for an “extension of time to file.”
An extension of time to file gives you more timeto get all your information together so you can file. However, it does not extend the time to pay the tax you owe. The tax is still due by April 15, 2009.
Here’s how an extension works:
Here are two ways to file for an extension with Indiana:
If you don’t have the money to pay taxes due, file your return anyway and pay as much as you can when you file. When you get your bill, call us and request a payment plan for the remainder. The Indiana Department of Revenue will work with you. If you think you will get a refund, be careful of waiting too long to file. You have only got a two-year window to file and to be eligible for a refund.
To speak with a bilingual representative at the Indiana Department of Revenue about filing for an extension, call (317) 232-2240 (press 2 for Spanish) from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. You can also visit the new and improved Spanish Web site at www.impuestos.in.gov/ or you can submit questions via e-mail to jevans@dor.in.gov
