DOR > En Español  > Where's My Refund? Where's My Refund?

March 17, 2009

This time of year, “Where is my refund?” is the number-one question asked of the Indiana Department of Revenue.

The quickest way to get your state refund is to file your taxes electronically and have your refund deposited into your checking or savings account. For those who file electronically, a refund takes an average of 7 to 14 days. However, if you mail in your state tax return, it can take up to 12 weeks – that’s three months versus two weeks. Who wants to wait that long?

If you’re waiting on a refund and haven’t received it, we can help. Simply have the exact whole-dollar amount of your refund and your Social Security number (if you filed married filing jointly, either number will do) on hand and then do one of the following:

  • Go to https://secure.in.gov/apps/dor/tax/refund/.
  • Call (317) 233-4018 for automated refund information. This service is available 24/7.
  • Call (317) 232-2240 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern, Monday – Friday, and a representative will help you.

If you authorized your refund to be directly deposited into your bank account, remember to check your recent bank records. It could already have been deposited in your checking or savings account.

If you moved after filing your tax return and don’t have a forwarding address on file with the U.S. Postal Service, the state needs to know where to send your refund check. Updating your address will allow the Indiana Department of Revenue to send your refund to your updated address if the U. S. Postal Service sends your refund back to Indiana Department of Revenue as undeliverable mail. You can take care of that by going to http://www.in.gov/dor/3795.htm

Either way, if you’re due a refund, the Indiana Department of Revenue wants to make sure you have it as quickly as possible – after all, it’s overpayment of the taxes you paid in 2008.

If you have any questions and would like to speak with a bilingual representative at the Indiana Department of Revenue, please call (317) 232-2240 (press 2 for Spanish) from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. You can also visit the Department’s Web site at http://www.dor.in.gov/ or you can submit questions via e-mail to jevans@dor.in.gov
