Russ and Sherri Rogers ride along the Salamonie Snowmobile trail, the only snowmobile trail on state property.

By Steve Polston

The sound is surprising. It’s like the high-pitched whine of a motorcycle on a rural highway in summer.
But Dale Brier, a DNR trail specialist, is riding patrol on the Miami Trail with a few inches of snow under his snowmobile’s skis.

I’m hanging on the back with my knees locked around the edge of the seat. Each barely hidden tree root, rock and rut is transmitted up through the machine’s frame to my body.

It is a not a bone-jarring, raucous ride through The Pines, a private campground near Bristol, Ind. But even at slow speed the sense of being on a powerful piece of equipment is inescapable.

I don’t want to do much except get off with my head intact.
