The massive bald cypress trees found here are representative of a swamp community that once existed over large portions of the Ohio and Wabash river valleys.
There's really nothing like Twin Swamps anywhere in Indiana. True, swamps
are not rare; some even harbor native bald cypress trees.
But few possess the quality and beauty of Twin Swamps Nature Preserve, a 598-acre tract located in Posey County.
There are two separate swamps here, one with a predominance of overcup oak, another southern specialty; but the bald cypress-cottonwood swamp is singular in its effects on the human emotion.
Visit in spring if you can. An easy, but often muddy trail will take you to a skillfully crafted boardwalk that leads you into the heart of the swamp.
The adventure begins here. Take your time and walk slowly to take it all in. Within seconds, your imagination takes over and you're transported hundreds of miles to the south, perhaps to a bayou in Louisiana or the panhandle of Florida.
