On Being An Officer

Matt and Kathy Vossmer and Gordon WoodMatt Vossmer, Indiana Conservation Officer

"I became a Conservation Officer because of the importance that fish and wildlife have played in my life. Growing up and still, I am an avid hunter and fishermen. It is important to me that these resources remain protected so that I can continue to enjoy them as well as allow those in future generations to also enjoy them. Being a Conservation Officer, I feel I am able to contribute to the good of society by educating and enforcing the laws as well as protecting the people I serve. I wouldn't have it any other way."

Kathy Vossmer, Matt's wife

"My father, Gordon Wood, is a Conservation Officer. As I was growing up, he instilled in me the values and ethics of following conservation law. I am proud that my husband, Matt, chose to become a Conservation Officer as well. Both men are well respected officers. They serve to educate the community about our laws as well as enforce them. Though sometimes their job makes me nervous, I know that they have been provided with necessary training to take care of themselves and the situation at hand. Besides, what girl doesn't like a man in uniform?"

Eric Doane Eric Doane, Indiana Conservation Officer

"I love the job because of the wide variety of things we do, from catching bad guys to teaching a child to shoot a gun for the first time. There's no such thing as an ordinary day. After nearly 20 years, I'm still working hard and having a good time."

Tish Doane, Eric's wife

"It's great being married to someone who truly loves their job! It makes for a great family life. My husband loves his job as an Conservation Officer and I'm proud of him for making a difference in peoples lives"
