Lake Michigan Coastal Program Grants

The Indiana DNR Lake Michigan Coastal Program receives an annual allotment of funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to administer a grants program to carry out projects which protect and restore natural, cultural and historic resources in Indiana's Lake Michigan coastal region.  The Lake Michigan Coastal Grants Program is an annual competitive grants program that awards funds to units of local government, regional and state agencies, colleges and universities, as well as to non-profit organizations. The program's funds may be expended on six different categories of projects, including public access or habitat improvements, land acquisition, planning and coordination, education and outreach, applied research, and emerging issues.  Projects must be located entirely within the Lake Michigan Coastal area, the northern portions of Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties. Since 2001, the Coastal Grants Program has funded more than $12 million in projects.

Basic Information about LMCP Grants

Approximately $600,000 of funding is available to local entities for projects meeting the program criteria for the 2017 grant cycle. Federal appropriations for the 2017 grant cycle are not yet set; as such, all projects that receive state approval will be considered conditionally approved. If Federal Appropriations for 2017 are less than for 2016, projects may receive a prorated award amount reflecting the difference in funding shortfall. The DNR Lake Michigan Coastal Program administers the Indiana Coastal Grants Program. The Indiana Coastal Grants Program is comprised of two components: (1) Large Scale Grant Program; and (2) Small Scale Grant Program.

2017 Funding Cycle - Large Grants

The Mission of the Lake Michigan Coastal Program is to protect and enhance coastal resources by providing technical and financial assistance and coordination to current and future partners.

The Coastal Grants program provides grants technical assistance, as well as funding to communities and organizations that seek out social, economic, and environmental solutions that promote partnerships and balance the use and protection of the coast’s valuable, yet fragile, resources.

If you think your agency or organization may be interested in applying, please read the “2017 Coastal Grant Pre-Proposal Guidance” (link below) to see if your organization and your project qualify for this program.  Several  LMCP Grant Workshops will be scheduled in July and August of 2016, to walk potential applicants through the grant program process.  Those dates have not yet been determined.  Keep checking back here for updates.
