Acreage protected in 2012: 4,300 acres
Indiana Heritage Trust celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2012 by permanently protecting more than 4,300 acres in 11 counties. The largest acquisition was the purchase of 3,475 acres at Fairbanks Landing Fish & Wildlife Area previously leased from Indiana Michigan Power.
It was one of two IHT contributions to the Healthy Rivers INitiative, a long-term land conservation project that identified nearly 70,000 acres along Sugar Creek and the Wabash and Muscatatuck rivers.
IHT also helped HRI purchase 475 acres in the Muscatatuck project area. In 2012, IHT funds also went to projects in Allen, Henry, Jefferson, Johnson, Lake and LaPorte counties.
