INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 3, 2007) – The Department of Local Government Finance has extended the deadline until Oct. 1, 2007, for Indiana counties to consider adopting the new public-safety revenue tool, as a means of reducing the burden of property taxes. Governor Mitch Daniels today ordered a reassessment of all real property in Marion County property based on evidence that business assessments were either left undone or performed inaccurately, contributing to an unfair tax burden on homeowners. The governor also said he will freeze tax bills for Marion County at 2006 amounts and recommended that the county issue provisional bills until the reassessment is completed and new bills are issued. Governor Mitch Daniels said today he will extend the deadline for counties to decide to use other available revenue tools to help them reduce local property taxes. Legislation enacted earlier this year gave counties the authority to adopt local option income taxes. The law says that counties must decide by Aug. 1 to use the tools for next year’s budget. Lower interest rates, higher yields and increased product prices drove the market value-based agricultural land assessment statewide from its previous value of $880/acre to $1,140/acre. (More)
