David W. Kane

On November 24, 2014, Governor Mike Pence appointed David W. Kane as the Executive Director of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.

As leader of the Indiana Department of Security, Director Kane is responsible for the state’s emergency management and homeland security efforts, including preparing for and recovering from natural and man-made mass casualty events.  His department includes the State Fire Marshal, State Building Commissioner and State EMS Medical Director.  IDHS staff support state commissions that regulate professional standards for firefighters, emergency medical personnel and commercial building codes in Indiana. 

Mr. Kane has over 30 years of experience in emergency response and management positions.

Prior to joining IDHS, Mr. Kane served as Federal Security Director for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Transportation Security Administration where he set the direction and oversaw policy implementation of the national transportation security program. From 1985 to 2002, he served as a Special Agent and federal air marshal within the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration.  Prior to joining federal service he was a criminal investigator with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department.

Mr. Kane has public safety experience working at all levels of government.  His ability to coordinate among numerous emergency response agencies was recognized when the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security appointed him Federal Coordinator for the 2012 Super Bowl in Indianapolis.  

As Director for IDHS, Mr. Kane serves on the Executive Policy Board for the Indiana Intelligence Fusion Center, the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force Executive Board, the U.S. Attorney’s Anti-Terrorism Advisory Council, 911 Board, Indiana Trauma Care Committee, Indiana Cybersecurity Executive Council and the Indiana Counter-Terrorism and Security Advisory Committee.
