As Indiana’s economy continues to improve, the number of projects submitted to the Division of Fire and Building Safety has increased. The additional volume means that it is taking longer to get a Construction Design Release (CDR) for a project. For your planning purposes, please allow 6 to 8 weeks for your CDR.
The Division of Fire and Building Safety is currently reviewing options to shorten the review time and maintain the quality of our reviews, including overtime and hiring additional staff. Remember you do have an option of an early foundation release to start below-grade work early.
The goal of building plan review is to accurately and consistently review your design of a Class I structure. Currently, the number of new projects is up 19% since 2011. Please allow us time to do a good job for you and the citizens of Indiana.
Also remember, your accurate and complete design documents help streamline the process.

The Plan Review staff reviews plans for construction and alteration of Class I structures for compliance with applicable adopted codes and standards, and prepares design releases for approval by the State Fire Marshal. Three main programs are included in this process: project filing, review and release documentation.
