DCS  > Child Support > Non-Custodial Party Information > Income Withholding Income Withholding

An Income Withholding Order (IWO) is an order that a court or child support (IV-D) office sends to the noncustodial parent's employer to instruct the employer to withhold child support payments from the noncustodial parent's paycheck.  The withheld payments are then sent by the employer to the Indiana State Central Collection Unit (INSCCU) to be applied to the child support obligation.

It is important to pay through IWO because it helps to ensure that payments are made in a timely manner, in the correct amounts, and to the right parties.  Paying by IWO also allows the county Clerk of Court to properly record the payments and keep an accurate payment history for the court.  State and Federal law requires that a noncustodial parent pay by an IWO unless a court approves an alternative arrangement.

Recently, several changes were made to the Income Withholding Order (IWO) form.  There are a few things you should know:

  • If you have an attorney, you may need to bring the new form to his/her attention.  For attorneys, the form and instructions can be found by clicking here.
  • If you handled your case pro se (without an attorney), there are a few things you will need to know about the new form.
The correct version of the IWO form MUST be used.  The form, along with simplified instruction for completing it, can be found by clicking here.  If this form is not used, the employer can refuse the withholding order and not withhold the income.
The information you will need in order to complete the form can be found in your most current child support order from the court.  If you do not have a copy of your most recent order, you can obtain one from your county Clerk of Court.  Once you obtain a copy of your latest order, follow the instruction in the link above.
