Procedures like dehorning, implanting or vaccinating where repeated use of the same needle or other medical instruments can result in small amounts of blood that can carry infectious disease agents. Though these organisms are unlikely to last for prolonged periods of time on equipment, transmission could occur when processing several animals in a short period of time. Stanchions, crates and other permanent fixtures or equipment as well as facilities can also become contaminated during birthing and other medical procedures.
Control Points
- Use disposable equipment (Discard artificial insemination sleeves and needles after one use).
- Clean and disinfect reusable equipment between every animal (tattoo pliers, gouges, hoof tools, implant guns).
- Use appropriate vaccine storage, handling and administration techniques.
- Segregate animals during birthing. Clean and disinfect facilities and equipment and vehicles.
