Entry Description

Accelerate 465 Opens 4 Lanes
Along 11 Miles of Interstate
Final Lane Restrictions End Sunday

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has opened additional traffic lanes on I-465 near the I-74 and US 136/Crawfordsville Road interchange, marking the culmination of Accelerate 465 improvements to the west side leg of the interstate.

Final lane restrictions will be necessary Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights to install reflective lane markers in both directions of I-465 between 10th Street (Exit 14) and 38th Street (Exit 17).  Some various ramp restrictions will be necessary at the I-465 interchange with I-74, US 136 and Crawfordsville Road, but all ramps will remain open.  Once the reflective markers are installed, work at the interchange will be substantially complete.

  • Tonight – Two lane restriction from midnight until 6 a.m. Friday
  • Friday night – Three lane restriction from midnight until 7 a.m. Saturday
  • Saturday night – Three lane restriction from midnight until 9 a.m. Sunday

Two combined contracts at the interchange, totaling about $80 million, built:

  • A new interchange configuration to improve traffic flow between I-465, I-74, US 136 and Crawfordsville Road
  • New pavement on I-465 between 21st and 34th Streets
  • An additional fourth travel lane, and additional auxiliary lanes for ramp traffic
  • 10 bridges – 4 over Eagle Creek, 2 over US 136/Crawfordsville Road, and 4 ramp overpasses
  • Improved drainage on I-465, I-74, US 136 and Crawfordsville Road
  • New signs, lighting, sidewalks and landscaping at the entrance to Speedway

INDOT and Walsh Construction, the state’s contractor, maintained three open lanes in each direction during high-volume commute times to minimize effects on traffic flow throughout the construction project.  INDOT and Walsh also coordinated construction activities to help successfully manage traffic flow during major racing events in Speedway.

The widened Eagle Creek bridges and added traffic lanes near the I-74 and US 136/Crawfordsville Road interchange are the final mainline interstate improvements to the west side corridor as part of Accelerate 465.

Accelerate 465—made possible by Gov. Mitch Daniels’ Major Moves transportation initiative—has created 4 travel lanes and 8 improved interchange configurations between Hanna Avenue and 56th Street.  Construction began in 2007 to increase transportation capacity, improve motorist safety and interstate access, as well as upgrade designs to current standards along 11 miles of I-465.

Final non-interstate construction continues at US 40/West Washington Street and High School Road.  Once complete, US 40 will have six eastbound lanes and five westbound lanes at High School Road.  Eastbound US 40 will have one left turn lane to northbound High School Road, one right turn lane to southbound High School Road, two lanes for through traffic, and two additional lanes for merging onto northbound and southbound I-465.  Westbound US 40 will have three through lanes beginning at the I-465 interchange and two dedicated turn lanes onto High School Road.
