Entry Description
Chief Sanford receives Indiana’s highest honor

STATEHOUSE – State Representative Cindy Kirchhofer (R-Beech Grove), alongside Jeff Cardwell, Special Assistant to Governor Mike Pence, presented Brian L. Sanford, the 41st Indianapolis Fire Chief, with a Sagamore of the Wabash award. Presented only to Hoosiers who have made significant contributions to the state, the Sagamore award is the highest honor the governor can bestow.

“Chief Sanford has devoted more than 30 years of service to the citizens of Indianapolis, and we are grateful for his selfless sacrifice to our community and state,” said Rep. Kirchhofer. “His dedication and service as a firefighter has kept countless Hoosiers safe, and as the Indianapolis Fire Chief, he been actively involved in our community, making it a better place to live. Chief Sanford has served honorably, and through his heroic actions, he is certainly deserving of Indiana’s highest honor.”

Former Chief Sanford began serving as a firefighter at the age of 27. He continued through the ranks to become Fire Chief of Warren Township and then as the 41st Indianapolis Fire Chief.

“I have known Chief Sanford for many years, through his leadership and by maintaining the highest standards, he led Indianapolis’s Fire Department to become one of the best in the nation,” said Rep. Kirchhofer. “Chief Sanford’s commitment to our state is something to truly celebrate, and I was honored to recognize this great Hoosier for all of his hard work and service to keeping our community safe.”

The Sagamore of the Wabash is the highest honor the governor’s office can bestow on a Hoosier. It is given to a person who displays “Humanity in Living, Loyalty in Friendship, Wisdom in Council and Inspiration in Leadership.”
