Lanane, Broden laud release of adoption subsidies
Start Date: 8/12/2014 All Day
End Date: 8/12/2014
Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS — Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson) and State Senator John Broden (D-South Bend) issued the following statements in response to an announcement from the governor’s office stating subsidies would be granted to families who have adopted Hoosier children through 2015:

“I applaud the governor for recognizing the importance of encouraging and incentivizing adoption in our state,” said Sen. Lanane.

“I truly believe in the maxim that a society is ultimately judged by how it treats its most vulnerable citizens,” commented Sen. Broden. “I am hard pressed to imagine a more vulnerable class of people than abused and neglected children.”

“As a state, we have an obligation to support these families who have stepped forward to adopt children who, through no fault of their own, have endured great pain and separation in their life,” Sen. Broden continued. “I applaud the governor for this long overdue step of honoring the state’s financial commitment and obligation to these families.”

Sen. Lanane added, “Senate Democrats have long pushed for Indiana to join every other state in making this incentive available to parents. As I’ve stated in the past concerning the administration’s policies –better late than never.”

In 2012, Sen. Broden introduced Senate Bill 348 urging state government to provide subsidies to parents who adopt children with special needs. He followed that up with Senate Bill 306 in 2013, maintaining the same concerns. Since then, nearly 1,400 Hoosier families have been placed on a waiting list to receive much needed funds to raise their special needs children adopted from the state’s foster care system. Studies by Notre Dame University economist Kasey Buckles conclude that each adoption of a child from fost care saves the state $200,000 in public benefits.

Sen. Lanane represents Indiana Senate District 25 includes the portions of Madison and Delaware counties, including the City of Muncie and portions of the City of Anderson.
