Rep. Lehe congratulates local families on long-standing farms

STATEHOUSE- State Representative Don Lehe (R-Brookston) congratulates five local families for receiving the Hoosier Homestead Award. Rep. Lehe joined Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann who presented the awards during a ceremony held in the Farm Bureau Building at the Indiana State Fair.

“It was an honor to present these awards to each of the farming families from my community,” said Rep. Lehe. “As a farmer, I am aware of the value of these long-standing farms and what their work means to our economy. Without the commitment and dedication that these families put forth every day, agriculture in Indiana would not be where it is today.”

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes farming families that have owned and operated the same farm for 100 years or more. Centennial awards were given for 100 years of ownership, while sesquicentennial and bicentennial awards were given for 150 and 200 years of ownership respectively.

The following list includes the local families that received Hoosier Homestead Awards:

The Barrett Farm, located in Lucerne in Cass County, has been operated since 1864 and received the Sesquicentennial award.
The Beard, Swartz and Hiatt Farm, located in Rossville in Clinton County, has been operated since 1864 and received the Sesquicentennial award.
The Kelley Farm, located in Brookston in White County, has been operated since 1903 and received the Centennial award.
The White family has two farms, both located in Delphi in Carroll County, and have been operated since 1891 and 1834, receiving the Sesquicentennial and Centennial respectively.

In 1976, the program was first established to acknowledge Indiana’s farming families that have made contributions to the economy, culture and the state’s overall advancement. Since the program’s inception, roughly 5,000 farms have been recognized for their dedication to Hoosier agriculture.

“These families should be proud of all they have accomplished over the years,” said Rep. Lehe. “It is remarkable to have so many generations come together, maintain and operate a farm after so many years, and their hard work is greatly appreciated and deserving of this recognition.”

Each year, two award ceremonies are held; one at the Statehouse in February and the other held at the State Fair in August. For more information on the Hoosier Homestead Award Program or to nominate at family for the award, visit />

State Rep. Don Lehe serves as Chairman of the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee. He also serves on the Environmental Affairs Committee and the Public Health Committee.  Rep. Lehe represents portions of White, Cass, Carroll, Clinton and Tippecanoe Counties.
