[DNR] Youth Dove Hunt, Kankakee Fish and Wildlife Area

Entry Description
Kankakee Fish and Wildlife Area will be host youth dove hunting program on Monday, Sept. 1, 2014.  This a special hunt for 10 new dove hunters in our managed sunflower fields.  The event is free and will teach proper hunting methods and shooting strategies for dove.

Arrival and registration will occur at 8:30 a.m. CDT at the Kankakee headquarters, 4320 West Toto Road, North Judson, IN 46366.  Hunters will begin with instructions on safe gun handling practices and hunter filed safety. Students will then be provided with lunch and practice shooting clay pigeons before heading out to the dove fields.  A parent or legal guardian must be in attendance for the duration of the event.

If a student needs a shotgun, some are available for loan but call soon to reserve. Free ammunition and clay pigeons will be provided.  Each hunter will receive two boxes of shells (steel shot only) for the hunt. Additional shells will be provided for practice before the hunt.

Dress appropriately for the weather. The temperature in early September can be hot with lots of sun. Long pants and a lightweight shirt that will conceal. Insect repellent and water will be provided. Consider bringing a seat or bucket to sit on in the field.

Additional Details
All hunters will be required to purchase a license.  A Harvest Information Program (HIP) number will also be required, but is free.  The cost of the statewide youth license, which includes the necessary stamps, is $7.  Apprentice Licenses are available for individuals which have not completed Hunter Education.  An individual may purchase up to three apprentice licenses before having to complete Hunter Education.

Because space is limited to 10 hunters, you must pre-register with Kankakee at (574) 896-3522 by Aug. 29. Hunting opportunities for this special hunt are offered on a first come first serve basis
