Entry Description
Family fun at summer festivals

One of the most vivid memories I have from childhood is cleaning my father’s school bus. My dad, Pete Meyer, was proud of his occupation as a school bus driver and took pride in his bus. My dad would have each of us kids help sweep, scrub and wax the outside and the inside of the bus, leaving it spotless. We were always happy to spend a long, hot day outside cleaning because it meant that my father would reward us by taking us to the Franklin County Fair and give us each a dollar to spend.

Growing up, we did not go out a lot which made a trip to the fair that much more exciting. It was one of the places my dad enjoyed taking the family to, knowing that we could see our friends and neighbors in a family-friendly atmosphere.

I loved seeing all the projects that my friends had entered into fair competitions and watching the animals. The hardest choice for me at that age was deciding what to purchase with my dollar because all the different food and activities gave so many tempting options. Looking back, I realize how great it was to have this special time with my dad and the rest of the family.

Parades and fairs signal the official start of summer for me, which is why I am very excited that we are currently on the cusp of festival season. You can see me at the Rush County Fair which will be going on this week, followed by the Franklin, Decatur, Ripley and Fayette County fairs in July.  The Oldenburg Freudenfest will also be going on in July at the town hall giving everyone the opportunity to learn about German history, traditional dancing and delicious, cultural cuisine.

The Greensburg Power of the Past 25th Anniversary Celebration, taking place in mid-August, provides families with a variety of activities including a fiddle contest, machinery show and live music.  Other celebrations during August will be held in several communities like Carthage, Connersville, Metamora and Friendship. It is great to know that everyone in our community will have the opportunity to bring their families out to festivals this summer, just like my dad brought me.

I urge each of you to take a few moments out of your summer to spend time in our community at a festival. We are lucky to be near a variety of fairs, so take advantage! Going to the fair reminds me of a much simpler time, which is something everyone can appreciate with today’s fast paced environment. So let your kids try some new activities or the unique food that is only available for a short period of time.

I look forward to seeing you and your family at the many events going on over the next few months. These events are a good opportunity for me to connect with constituents, but you can also reach me anytime via email at
