Celebrate Independence Day at community events

Independence Day is a time to be with friends and family, while being thankful for our country’s freedom. As Americans we must never forget the service of our men and women in uniform and their work to secure our liberties. It is because of these sacrifices that we have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of local celebrations in honor of this historic day.

In case you have not already made your Fourth of July plans, I want to provide a few examples of how you can spend time in the community this holiday weekend, while also paying tribute to those who have and continue to defend our great nation. To kick the holiday weekend off early, one option is to attend White County’s Wolcott Summer Festival which starts on Thursday. Taking place at the historic Wolcott House and grounds, participants can eat at the Thursday night Hog Roast and then participate in a water ball contest.

Other festivities at the Wolcott Summer Festival will be taking place all day Friday allowing attendees to browse the flea market, enjoy live entertainment, eat delicious food and watch the Independence Day parade at 2 p.m.

Also on Independence Day, you may be interested in attending the Twelve Mile 500 riding lawnmower race in Cass County. This fun and exciting competition prides itself on being America’s oldest lawnmower race and has three different qualifying contests. The park will open at 9 a.m., giving racers time to register and prepare for the race which starts in the afternoon.

Over the holiday weekend you can find me watching the Lion’s Club Fourth of July Parade in Delphi or the Proud to be an American Patriotic Boat Parade in Monticello. The boat parade will be led by the Madam Carroll, which will be filled with veterans and leading a long line of over 60 decorated boats on Lake Freeman. Those invited to be on the boat this year include all veterans and currently serving military members, as a way to celebrate their service and thank them for securing our freedom.

With so many events going on this weekend, there are plenty of opportunities to be with friends and family, and I hope to see many of you at these patriotic events. As you spend this time in the community, I also hope that you will remember the importance of this holiday. The Fourth of July is a time of celebration, but it is also a time of reflection, to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the freedoms that you and I enjoy every day.
