Start Date: 6/10/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 6/10/2014
Entry Description
Indianapolis, IN-A man observed by an Indiana State Police trooper brandishing a firearm on I-465 was arrested after trying to flee police.

On Sunday June 8th at approximately 5:11 p.m., Trooper Adam Buell was traveling NB on I-465 in the left lane near the 41.6 mm and observed a Hispanic male driver in a Nissan SUV in the far right lane brandishing and pointing a handgun at other vehicles. Trooper Buell activated his emergency lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop. The driver placed the handgun in the passenger’s seat and continued driving at approximately 30 MPH with both hands out the driver’s window for approximately one mile before stopping on the right emergency shoulder near the 40.2mm.

Trooper Buell exited his vehicle with his firearm drawn and ordered the driver to keep his hands in sight and remain in the vehicle. Buell opened the door and attempted to take the driver into custody when he began to physically and verbally resist. Buell holstered his weapon and placed the driver on the ground. The driver continued to resist and attempted to grab Buell’s taser. Buell deployed his taser, however minimal results were obtained due to the taser striking both Buell and the driver.

Buell disengaged and the driver ran down the emergency shoulder onto the collector ramp for 56th Street/Shadeland Avenue. Buell returned to the Nissan SUV and secured the semi-automatic handgun found on the front passenger seat.

Buell returned to his police car and proceeded up the collector ramp to locate the driver. Trooper Dan Criswell and Probationary Officer Lamar Saunders had located the driver as he was attempting to carjack a Chevrolet Impala. The victim in the Impala stated the man was in the roadway waving for help and he stopped to offer assistance. The man was yelling and screaming and attempted to gain entry into the rear door. When he found the rear door locked he reached into the driver’s window and attempted to remove the keys from the ignition. The victim drove off to avoid the man.

Criswell and Saunders were able to place the suspect into custody.

An ID card located on the driver identified him as Abraham Lopez, 23, of Indianapolis.

During the course of the investigation, suspected drug paraphernalia was located inside the Nissan SUV.

Lopez was transported to the Marion County Processing Center and faces the following charges:
Criminal Confinement, Class D Felony, Criminal Recklessness, Class D Felony, Pointing as Firearm, Class D Felony, Resisting Law Enforcement, Class A Misdemeanor, Possession of a Firearm without a License, Class A Misdemeanor, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Class A Misdemeanor.
