Entry Description

Vermillion County—This morning at 9:15, Indiana State Police and Vermillion County emergency agencies responded to a two vehicle crash on State Road 63 at SR 234 which left one person dead and one critically injured.

Deceased Driver: Joshua R. Ellis, age 29, of Williamsport, Indiana
Pronounced deceased at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis
Family notified

Passenger in Ellis car: Richard A. Ogborn, age 29, of Williamsport, Indiana (critical)
Airlifted to Methodist Hospital for head and internal injuries

Preliminary investigation revealed a northbound on SR 63 tractor-trailer, driven by 43-year-old Cory Bushong of Hoopeston, Illinois, was attempting to pass through the SR 234 intersection, when a 1995 Geo Prism car driven by Ellis pulled into the path of the tractor-trailer. The passenger car was struck broadside on the driver’s side. Both Ellis and Ogborn were extricated by members of the Cayuga Fire/Rescue Department with assistance from Perrysville Fire/Rescue Department and transported to Union Hospital of Clinton with critical injuries. Ellis and Ogborn were later airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis by Lifeline Air Ambulance Service. Preliminary toxicology reports indicated Ellis tested positive for marijuana. Witness reports indicated Ellis appeared to be using his cell phone at the time of the crash. The tractor-trailer had the right of way at the time of the crash.

The crash was investigated by ISP Master Trooper Jeremy Lewis. Assisting were additional ISP Troopers, Vermillion County Sheriff’s deputies, Cayuga Town Marshal’s Office, Cayuga and Perrysville Fire Departments, and Vermillion County EMS.

A commercial vehicle inspection of the tractor-trailer was conducted by ISP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Trooper Brent Hoover with no deficiencies found and no citations issued. The tractor was a 2014 Kenworth pulling a grain trailer and operated by Herman Trucking LLC of Hoopeston, Illinois. The load originated in Terre Haute, Indiana and was headed for Hoopeston, Illinois.
