[ISP] Lake Station Police Officer Injured in Crash
Start Date: 6/1/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 6/1/2014
Entry Description

Lake Station-A Lake Station Police Officer going to a fight in progress call was involved in a crash that sent four people to the hospital.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Khari Walton revealed that at approximately 8:19 p.m., this Saturday, May 31, 2014, evening, Lake Station Police Officer Ryan Haas, 35 of Valparaiso, was driving a 2010 fully marked Chevrolet Tahoe police car north bound on State Road 51 (Ripley) with all its emergency lights and siren activated. Haas was making a left turn onto the north junction of Old Hobart Road when he failed to see a 1999 Ford Mustang, driven by Paulette Reed, 44 of Lake Station that was south bound on S.R. 51. A semi that was on south bound S.R. 51 was in the left turn lane waiting to make a left turn into a local truck stop which obscured the line of sight of the police car and the Mustang. As the police car made its left it hit the driver’s front of the Mustang.

Haas was taken to Saint Mary’s Medical Center in Hobart with non-life threatening injuries; he was wearing his seat belt.

Reed and her two children (who were passengers in the car) were also taken to Saint Mary’s Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries; they also were wearing their seat belts.

The Indiana State Police were contacted by the Lake Station Police Department to investigate the crash.

The intersection and one lane north and south bound on S.R. 51 was closed for reconstruction of the crash, transporting of the inured, and towing of the vehicles.
