[ISP] Hartford City Man Injured in Motorcycle Crash
Start Date: 5/7/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 5/7/2014
Entry Description

Wayne County – Tonight around 7:10 p.m. a Hartford City man was seriously injured when the motorcycle he was riding ran off the right side of the road and ejected its rider. Bryan Worden, age 35 of Hartford City, was taken to Reid Hospital in Richmond by ambulance, then later flown by medical helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, for injuries sustained in the crash.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Bryan Rumple revealed that the 2003 Harley Davidson was traveling northbound on US 35, at a high rate of speed, when it failed to negotiate the curve just north of Jacksonburg Road. The motorcycle ran off the right side of the road hitting a drainage pipe ejecting Worden.

Further investigation revealed that Worden did not have a motorcycle endorsement on his license, and that his Indiana Driver’s License was suspended. Worden was not wearing a helmet. Troopers urge all motorcycle riders to wear helmets. According to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, 151 motorcycle fatalities occurred in Indiana during 2012. Of those fatalities, 122 people were not wearing helmets.

Investigators believe that alcohol did play a role in the crash. Trooper Rumple was assisted at the scene by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, the Hagerstown Police Department, Cumberland EMS and Economy Fire and Rescue.

Troopers offer the following safety tips for motorcyclists:

• Wear a DOT approved helmet and riding safety gear.
• Don’t consume alcohol while riding. During 2012, 36 motorcycle fatalities occurred in Indiana involving alcohol.
• Be visible. Ensure your headlight, taillight and brake light work properly.
• Wear high visibility clothing.
• Use lane positioning to increase visibility and watch for turning vehicles.
• Avoid riding in blind spots.
