[ISP] Motorcycle Crash Claims Life of Off-Duty Marion County Deputy
Start Date: 4/21/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 4/21/2014
Entry Description
Indianapolis, IN – At about 7:30 on the evening of April 20, 2014, Indiana State Police Trooper Justin Geltmaker was dispatched to a motorcycle crash in the 8900 block of Acton Road, on the south side of Indianapolis.

Preliminary investigation indicates that off-duty Marion County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Eric W. Stofer, 35, of Indianapolis, was riding a Sliver 2002 Suzuki motorcycle when he struck a pothole as he was driving south on Acton Road, just south of Maze Creek Road. This resulted in loss of control of the motorcycle, which crashed and came to rest on top of Deputy Stofer. No one else was riding on the motorcycle with Deputy Stofer and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The cause of death will be determined by autopsy. Neither alcohol or speed are considered factors in this crash. Deputy Stofer was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Deputy Stofer did possess a valid motorcycle license.

While it is not known for certain the use of a helmet would have prevented Deputy Stofer’s death, the Indiana State Police strongly recommend drivers and passengers of motorcycles always wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle.

Any questions about Deputy Stofer should be directed to the Marion County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer, Katie Carlson, at 317-327-6979, or by email at

Immediate family has been notified. No further information about the crash is available.
