East Street Bridge Work Begins This Week

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors plan to shift traffic this week to begin rebuilding and raising the East Street bridge over Interstate 70 near the south split.

Beaty Construction, the INDOT contractor for the project, plans to install construction signs tomorrow on I-65, I-70 and East Street. Weather permitting, Beaty expects to shift traffic on East Street into the first phase work zone configuration on Wednesday. The contractor will then begin removing half of the existing bridge deck.

East Street will remain open to one lane in each direction as the bridge is rebuilt one-half at a time. The first phase involves shifting both directions of traffic to share the east side of the bridge as contractors rebuild the west half. Once the west half is complete, both directions of traffic will be shifted to share the new side of the bridge as contractors build the second phase.

East Street will have a 20 mph speed limit for vehicles, and one sidewalk will provide pedestrian access across the bridge during construction. Some temporary closures or flagging of traffic across the bridge will be requested during off-peak traffic times (overnight and weekend). The short-term restrictions will be limited to specific operations, such as demolition, setting beams and pouring parts of the bridge deck, and are intended to improve motorist and worker safety. I-70 under the East Street bridge will also have some overnight and weekend lane restrictions beginning with removal of the existing structure.

Before the end of this year, INDOT intends to raise the East Street bridge by about twelve inches to achieve a minimum clearance of at least 15 feet, 1 inch. Last year, INDOT was able to increase clearances of seven bridges near the south split to at least 15 feet.  An accelerated project closed I-70 and I-65 between the north and south split for 44 days to reconstruct and lower one-half mile of pavement. The South Split project was necessary to reduce the potential for collisions from unpermitted and off-route trucks with oversize and unsecure loads. Repeated bridge strikes from these trucks posed a safety concern.

Even with the increased clearances at the South Split, INDOT reminds all drivers to follow safety requirements by properly securing and measuring all loads, obtaining permits for loads higher than 13 feet 6 inches and following designated routes for oversize vehicles.

Information about the project and video of bridge strikes are available at Motorists, businesses and residents are encouraged to stay informed by signing up to receive email updates using the red GovDelivery envelope icon.

Project updates are posted to INDOT’s social media pages for East Central Indiana, which includes Indianapolis. Project posts are tagged with #SouthSplit on the Indiana Department of Transportation: East Central Facebook page and on Twitter @INDOT_ECentral.
