Bill protecting students with allergies signed in to law

STATEHOUSE – House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1323 authored by State Representative Dave Ober (R-Albion) allowing epinephrine in institutions of higher education was signed in to law.

HEA 1323 establishes guidelines to better protect college students and faculty in the event that requires the administration of epinephrine. This legislation allows higher education entities to develop policies on their campuses relating to who can administer epinephrine and related training programs.

“Between 4 and 6 percent of a college’s students and staff is at risk for a life threatening allergic reaction. As a former resident assistant at Purdue, I understand the need for universities to have policies in place in regards to epinephrine,” said Rep. Ober.
HEA 1323 provides civil immunity for anyone affiliated with a university that has established an epinephrine plan who administers an EpiPen to someone.

“Guaranteeing civil immunity to those who acted in good faith when administering an EpiPen will encourage college campuses to establish epinephrine plans and training programs, creating a safer environment for the entire university,” Rep. Ober said.

Rep. Ober represents all of Noble County and portions of Allen, Elkhart, LaGrange and Whitley counties.
