Entry Description

U.S. 31 Traffic Shifting Monday

WESTFIELD – Contractors for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) plan to begin on or after Monday, April 7 shifting all lanes of U.S. Highway 31 to share the northbound side of the highway between State Road 38 and 169th Street.

Once the traffic shift is complete, crews will begin construction of the southbound lanes of the new U.S. 31 freeway through the end of this year. During this time, the following restrictions will be in place:

  • Southbound U.S. 31 reduced to one lane between State Road 38 and State Road 32
  • Northbound U.S. 31 reduced to one lane between 181st Street and State Road 38
  • Access to/from 203rd Street at U.S. 31 permanently removed

Once traffic is shifted between State Road 38 and 169th Street, left turns to/from U.S. 31 will only be permitted at 181st/Hoover Street, 196th Street, State Road 32 and 169th Street. Barrier wall, tubular markers and signage will be in place to encourage motorists to only make left turns at these locations between State Road 38 and 169th Street.

As part of the traffic shift on or after April 7, a yellow flashing turn arrow will be activated at the temporary traffic signal at U.S. 31 and 196th Street. This type of signal allows left-turning traffic to yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic and pedestrians and turn when a suitable gap is available. More information about the flashing yellow left-turn arrow is available on INDOT’s web site at www.in.gov/indot/3202.htm.
