Entry Description
Bill regarding motor vehicle financial responsibility signed into law

STATEHOUSE — House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1059, authored by State Rep. Matt Lehman (R-Berne), was signed into law by Governor Mike Pence.

“Indiana has a serious problem with uninsured motorists,” said Rep. Lehman. “HEA 1059 seeks to increase the fines and penalties for those who break the law in order to limit the number of uninsured motorists.”

HEA 1059 defines vehicle registration to include the license plate issued in connection with the registration of a vehicle. This means that the suspension of a person’s driving privileges will include their vehicle registration which will significantly increase the personal cost of being an uninsured motorist.

“According to the Insurance Research Council, Indiana is a top 10 state for uninsured motorists,” said Rep. Lehman. “Increasing fines and suspending vehicle registration will help prevent and penalize those who are uninsured from driving.”

HEA 1059 also states that the fees for the reinstatement of a suspended driving license will increase on Jan. 1, 2015. The fee for a first suspension will be $250, for a second suspension will be $500 and for a third suspension will be $1,000.
