Entry Description
It’s hard to believe it, but it’s true: the 2014 legislative session officially came to a close. Over the course of the last three months, the General Assembly worked diligently to complete our legislative agenda – cutting taxes, supporting infrastructure improvements, closing the skills gap, enhancing education opportunities and cutting red tape.

We listened to the needs of Hoosiers and took the ideas, opinions and suggestions shared with us to develop the best policies possible for our state. To achieve these goals, we crafted five main priority bills representing the direction the state should work toward.

In order to support and grow Indiana’s workforce, we provided grants to school corporations that partner with businesses to give students internships and learning opportunities that will lead to jobs in high-wage, high demand industries. This is a great step in the right direction and will help deal with the skills gap issue that our state faces. We will continue to look for creative ways to bring more employers to our state who want to grow and expand their business.

Lowering taxes is another way we are encouraging business growth and development.  By addressing the Business Personal Property Tax, local governments will now have the opportunity to decide whether or not to exempt new investments on business equipment. We also passed policies phasing down the corporate income and financial institutions tax rates to 4.9 percent by 2022, giving Indiana the second lowest corporate income tax rate in the nation.

Not only did we work to attract more business, we also made things easier for companies around the state by cutting duplicative code and layers of bureaucracy. We removed over 2,000 lines of code, giving businesses opportunity to compete without jumping through excessive hoops and fighting through bureaucratic red tape.

Another way to ensure that Indiana remains on top is to keep our highways and infrastructure intact. Our prudent fiscal nature allowed us to devote up to $400M in additional funds to work on major highway lane improvements and leverage those funds to draw upon a potential of $1.6B from the federal government.

Our agenda demonstrates how we strive to improve Indiana as well as support our state’s strengths. Achieving the goals set forth by our agenda was a success. Now that session has ended, I look forward to seeing the positive impact of the  implementation of these new laws on our state. Successfully representing our community in Indianapolis would not be possible without your thoughts and concerns supplying a variety of ideas for the development of Indiana.

After a few days of catching up at home, my wife and I are headed to the East Coast to visit family and then I will be back in our community full-time, ready to dive in to the interim.
