[ISP] Michigan Woman Jailed on Child Neglect
Start Date: 3/7/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 3/7/2014
Entry Description

Steuben County, IN-A 27 year old woman from Ann Arbor, Michigan was lodged in the Steuben County Jail early this morning on multiple charges after leading an Indiana State Police Trooper on a short vehicle pursuit which started in the city of Angola.

According to Trooper Matt Lazoff, at approximately 2:00 a.m he attempted to stop a Mercedes Benz passenger car for multiple traffic violations. The driver of the vehicle, Heather Amber-Mae Blessing pulled her vehicle into the parking lot of Wal-Mart before accelerating and heading back north on Wayne Street.

After about two miles, in the area of County Road 400 N, Blessing lost control and ran off the east side of the road and got stuck in the snow. She allegedly ignored numerous verbal commands given by Lazoff as she exited the vehicle and ran to the rear passenger door. She was taken into custody by Lazoff and other officers who arrived to assist. After taking Blessing into custody, officers saw that she had her one year old son sitting in the back seat of her car. He was placed into protective custody by the Division of Child Services. A stolen and loaded nine millimeter handgun was also found on the front passenger side floorboard.

Further investigation by Lazoff and with the assistance of a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) from the Angola Police Department revealed that Blessing, who claimed to be 19 weeks pregnant, had been smoking meth hours before she was observed driving. Following a medical examination at Cameron Hospital, she was incarcerated without bond on the following preliminary charges:

• Neglect of a Dependent
• Resisting Law Enforcement
• Operating While Intoxicated With Passenger Less Than 18 Years of age
• Operating While Intoxicated-Felony
• Possession of Stolen Property
• Driving While Suspended Prior
