RELEASE: Senator Young's Indiana Grown Commission Passes Senate
Start Date: 2/25/2014 All Day
End Date: 2/25/2014
Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS—On Monday, the Senate unanimously approved House Bill (HB) 1039, a measure sponsored by Senator Richard D. Young (D-Milltown) that would establish a commission to promote and market Indiana-produced agricultural products.

“Eating healthy, local and organic food is at an all-time high in the United States,” Sen. Young said. “And it’s important that we promote the food that Hoosiers have available in their own backyard.”

The measure would create the Indiana Grown Commission, a nine-member body that would be responsible for connecting the agricultural industry with Indiana-owned restaurants, grocers, wholesalers, processors, farmer’s markets and other retail businesses. The Commission would consist of representatives of the agricultural industry, restaurants, retailers, farmer’s markets and members with experience in marketing or agritourism. The members would meet throughout the year to connect, promote and market locally-grown and produced food to Indiana businesses.

“The commission will help bridge the gap between Hoosier farmers and Indiana consumers,” Sen. Young said.

The Indiana Grown Commission would work with the Indiana Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Indiana General Assembly to develop and promote the program. It would also be responsible for offering recommendations for legislation in an annual report to the Legislative Council, a statutory council composed of 16 legislators who are responsible for coordinating and assisting with legislative proceedings. The President Pro Tempore of the Senate serves as Chairman in odd-numbered years, while the Speaker of the House serves as chairman in even-numbered years.

The proposal now moves the governor and awaits his signature.

Sen. Young represents Senate District 47 which encompasses portions of Crawford, Dubois, Harrison, Orange, Perry and Washington counties. For more information on Sen. Young, his legislative agenda or other State Senate business, call 1-800-382-9467 or visit www.IN.gov/s47.
