[ISP] Unsafe Speed Causes One Vehicle Crash
Start Date: 2/5/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 2/5/2014
Entry Description

Lake County-Today at approximately 10:15 a.m. CDT on I-80 westbound near the 14.9 mile marker westbound (that is near the Ripley Street Exit), a semi traveling to fast for the conditions of the roadway crashed sending his load across three lanes of the interstate.

Preliminary investigation by Indiana State Police Master Trooper Steve Caylor has revealed that a red 1998 International owned by CRST Malone Inc. out of Birmingham, AL and driven by Juan M. Munoz 39 years old from Hammond, IN was traveling westbound on I-80 near the 14.9 mm when he came up on Master Trooper Caylor in his High Performance unmarked Mustang patrol car with its emergency light activated. Master Trooper Caylor was in route to another crash when he saw the semi come up behind him and pass him in the snow and icy road conditions. Munoz saw the crash that Master Trooper Caylor was going to and locked up the brakes causing the semi to jack knife and hit the inside barrier wall. The load of sheet metal on the trailer came loose and was scattered across all three lanes of I-80 causing the interstate to be closed. The semi came to rest approximately 10 yards from the crash that Master Trooper Caylor was originally in route too.

The International received heavy front end damage and had to be towed from the scene. Work is still continuing on cleaning up the 51,000 pounds of sheet metal that was strewn across all lanes. At this time the left lane is still shut down for cleanup of the highway. Munoz received a citation for too fast for the conditions of the roadway.

The investigation is continuing.
