[IDEM] Von Duprin, LLC joins IDEM’s Environmental Stewardship Program
Start Date: 1/31/2014 All Day
End Date: 1/31/2014
Entry Description

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) has welcomed Von Duprin, LLC as the newest member of Indiana’s Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP). Assistant Commissioner Rick Bossingham on Tuesday presented a certificate, plaque and flag to Ken Verhulst, plant manager, during an induction ceremony at the company’s Tobey Drive location on Indianapolis’ east side.

ESP is a voluntary incentive program that requires participants to set specific goals for environmental improvement and report results. To become an ESP member, businesses must maintain an exemplary environmental compliance record with IDEM, certify that they have adopted and implemented an approved environmental management system, and commit to specific measures for continued improvement in their environmental performance.

In becoming an ESP member, Von Duprin, LLC has launched several major initiatives, including a compressed air reduction project; a project to identify ways to reuse landfilled waste; recycling improvements; recycling education programs; cooling tower elimination; sludge dryer efficiency improvements; and lawn care watering reductions.

“IDEM is proud to have Von Duprin as an environmental steward, reducing pollution at the source, committing to continually improving environmental performance even where the law does not require it, and taking action that will benefit our communities,” said Bossingham. “The management and employees of Von Duprin, LLC can be proud of their extraordinary commitment to protecting public health and the environment.”

“Participating in the ESP program is the natural extension of our EMS system, as was our participation in VPP Star,” said Wayne Bewley. Bewley served for a time as plant manager, was involved in submitting the company’s ESP application, and remains active in the company’s environmental initiatives. “By partnering with government, we bring in positive, proactive, outside sets of eyes, to help us continually improve and strive for world class standards,” he said.

Von Duprin’s environmental management system is ISO 14001 certified. VPP Star is a federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration voluntary recognition program for exemplary worksites with comprehensive, successful safety and health management systems.

Once accepted to the ESP program, members qualify for expedited permit review, reduced reporting frequencies, and coordination of compliance inspections. To maintain ESP membership, companies must report on their environmental initiatives every year. Companies must reapply for ESP membership every three years. Von Duprin, LLC joins 46 other Indiana businesses that actively participate in ESP. For additional program details, visit IDEM's website at
