Snow, Strong Winds and Cold Temperatures to Make Driving Difficult

INDIANAPOLIS – Another clipper system is crossing the state tonight expected to drop two to three inches of new snow on East Central Indiana through Saturday morning. Strong sustained winds of more than 20 mph and gusts of more than 40 mph will cause blowing and drifting on roadways, lowering visibility and making driving difficult in potentially white-out conditions.

INDOT currently has yellow trucks on patrol, plowing back areas of blowing and drifting and making room for more snow. Additional crews will be called in ahead of anticipated snowfall and will plow and treat interstates, U.S. highways and state routes as needed to keep the roads as safe as possible during winter weather.

Cold temperatures and periods of snowfall are expected to continue for several days and into next week. Motorists should be aware of local developing forecasts and be prepared for weather conditions before driving.

If driving in inclement weather, slow down and adjust behaviors to the conditions encountered on the road. Crashes, slide offs and traffic backups prevent INDOT trucks from plowing and treating routes on a regular schedule of every 2-3 hours, and jeopardize the safety of other motorists.

The Indiana State Police and other law enforcement agencies encourage the public to keep its phone lines open for emergencies and to access road conditions at or by dialing toll-free 800-261-ROAD (7623).
