[ISP] Jennings Co. Crash Sends Seven to Hospital

Entry Description

Jennings County: This afternoon a three vehicle crash sent seven to the hospital. According to Trooper Randel Miller, at approximately 2:50 this afternoon a 1998 Ford Contour driven by 85 year old Hershell Cook of North Vernon was stopped on westbound U.S. 50 awaiting traffic to clear to make a left turn onto C.R. 240W when a 1999 Ford Expedition driven by 23 year old Peggy Ramirez of North Vernon was also westbound and struck the Ford Contour in the rear end. The impact sent the Ford Contour into the eastbound lane where it was struck by a 2005 Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by 69 year old Ronald Seibert of Batesville. All three drivers and four other occupants in the vehicles were transported to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital. Below are the names of the injured and extent of their injuries:

Hershell Cook-Serious head injury (later transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis)
Reta Cook, age 81 of North Vernon (wife of Hershell Cook), passenger in Cook vehicle-complaint of chest pain.
Ronald Seibert-Broken knee cap
Peggy Ramirez-complaint of chest pain
Morgan Ritchie, age 18 of North Vernon, passenger in Ramirez vehicle-compliant of chest pain
Debra Kutz, age 17 of North Vernon, passenger in Ramirez vehicle-complaint of chest pain
Grayson Bartlett, age 7 months of North Vernon, passenger in Ramirez vehicle-transported as a precaution (no obvious injuries)

Trooper Miller commented, “Everyone involved in the crash was properly restrained including the baby. The use of seat belts and child restraint system prevented more serious injury or death.”

The crash remains under investigation. Neither alcohol or drugs is suspected as being a factor in the crash. Assisting Tpr. Miller at the scene was Jennings County Sheriff’s Department, North Vernon Police Department, North Vernon Fire Department, and Rescue 20.
