[ISP] Traffic Stop Leads to Foot Chase, One Arrested
Start Date: 1/20/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 1/20/2014
Entry Description
Indianapolis, IN- An Indianapolis man is in custody and faces several charges after he led an Indiana State Trooper on a foot chase early this morning.

Early this morning, January 20th, at approximately 3:00 a.m., Trooper Jarrin Franklin stopped a 2012 Chevrolet on I-70 EB at the 83.9 mm. for a traffic violation. As soon as the vehicle stopped, the driver, later identified as Antwand Wallace, 33, of Indianapolis, exited the vehicle with a handgun and ran. Trooper Franklin gave chase and encountered Wallace when he jumped over the interstate guardrail. Both subjects slid down the rock and grass covered embankment with Franklin still in foot pursuit after reaching the bottom.

Wallace tossed away the handgun during the foot pursuit.

He was captured on East Ludlow Ave. at Balley Ave. with the assistance of Indianapolis Fire Department personnel from Ladder 27B. Ladder 27B was enroute to a medical run with emergency lights and siren operating and observed the trooper chasing Wallace with his gun drawn. Wallace was running straight towards the fire apparatus waving his arms. IFD Engineer Danny Smith positioned the fire apparatus in Wallace’s path which allowed for Trooper Franklin to subdue him. Fire personnel Smith, Private Andy Killiliea, Private Tim Harvel and Captain Jerry Martin then assisted Trooper Franklin secure Wallace while Franklin was catching his breath. Ladder 27B personnel then administered first aid to Franklin and Wallace prior to their transport to area hospitals.

The tossed handgun was located and was found to be reported stolen.

Wallace was transported to Eskenazi Hospital for treatment of scrapes he sustained while sliding down the embankment. Trooper Franklin was also treated and released for cuts, abrasions and a bruised hand at Methodist Hospital.

Wallace faces charges of driving while suspended with a prior convention. Class A misdemeanor, convicted felon in possession of a handgun, Class B felony, possession of a handgun without a license, Class C felony and resisting law enforcement causing bodily injury, Class D felony.

As a side note, despite all of the activity incurred during the initial response, IFD’s diversion did not prevent them from contacting dispatch to start another apparatus to the original EMS run at the Jail. That patient received prompt medical attention as well.
