[IDEM] IDEM gives environmental tips for a safe winter
Start Date: 1/17/2014 All Day
End Date: 1/17/2014
Entry Description

There are easy, simple steps that can be taken to help protect the environment this season

The cold temperatures and slick sidewalks and roads might be an unfortunate inconvenience of the winter months, but there are ways to deal with winter weather in a safe, environmentally friendly way. For example, if you are using chemical salts to melt ice off your sidewalk, be sure not to over apply or allow the salts to fall on your lawn or garden. Excess salts can be damaging to flora. If you spread sand for traction, don’t overuse it either, as that excessive material can cause problems in stormwater systems.

You might also want to think twice before turning the heat up on your thermostat this winter. Instead of keeping the temperatures at summer like levels, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) encourages people to set the thermostat at 68, or even lower. With the money you save on your heating bill, you could buy a large collection of matching argyle sweaters for the whole family; while at the same time protecting the Hoosier environment.

Other winter weather conservation tips include:

• Winterizing your vehicle by checking your air filter and fluid levels, checking tires for tread wear and proper inflation, and checking the condition of your windshield wipers. Ensuring your vehicle is ready for weather changes will reduce damage, which prevents waste from broken parts, and will keep you safe on the road.

• Making sure your heating system (boiler, furnace or heat pump) is operating efficiently. It is a good idea to have a contractor perform a routine check-up and any necessary maintenance on the equipment before freezing weather drives up your energy bill.

• Now is a good time to reevaluate lighting in your home. As new federal lighting efficiently standards are phasing out some incandescent bulbs, switching to LED or CFL bulbs can save up to 75-percent on your lighting costs.
