[ATG] Attorney General's statement on latest developments in Target data breach
Start Date: 1/10/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 1/10/2014
Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS – Commenting today on Target’s announcement that its recent data breach now involves an additional 70 million customers, Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller said his office continues to participate in a multi-state investigation of the data breach that focuses on the responsibility of companies toward the personal information they collect from customers.

“Target can claim to be victim of a criminal act of hacking but they also must accept the responsibility that flows from their maintaining a database of customer marketing data collected through each card swipe or online purchase.  Retailers that hold vital consumer information and profit from it have an especially important obligation to protect that data.  The Office of the Attorney General as the consumer protection agency will continue to review Target’s data-collection practices in light of this loss of public trust during the holiday shopping season,” Zoeller said.

Target Corp. today announced that the data breach of personal information that occurred between mid-November and mid-December included approximately 70 million customers, in addition to the 40 million customers previously announced.  According to the company, stolen information includes names, mailing addresses, phone numbers and email addresses.  The retailer announced it is also offering free credit monitoring to its shoppers.

Zoeller encourages Hoosiers to visit the Indiana Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division website, www.indianaconsumer.com, for proactive tips on preventing identity theft and fraud.  From that site, consumers can sign up for a security freeze that will prevent someone from opening up a line of credit in the consumer’s name without the consumer’s permission.
