[ISP] Cold Temperatures, Black Ice, and Speed Equal Crashes
Start Date: 1/7/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 1/7/2014
Entry Description

Lowell, IN-Troopers from the Indiana State Police Lowell District which consist of Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Newton, Jasper, Pulaski and Starke Counties have been busy all day with numerous crashes, slide offs and spin outs.

Extreme icy conditions persist on all roads due to the subzero temperatures; because of the cold temperatures we also have the formation of black ice. This “phenomenon” occurs every year with the winter weather yet some motorists forget this fact and don’t change their driving behaviors.

Black ice is a dangerous condition because it is difficult to detect and may catch drivers off guard. It quickly forms in extremely cold weather, like today. It causes moisture to rapidly freeze, creating a thin, transparent layer of ice on the roadway.

Bridges, overpasses, underpasses and ramps can be especially dangerous. Road salt is less effective in these subzero temperatures, and icy roads should be expected on all roads across Northwest Indiana, likely through tomorrow, when temperatures are expected to become more favorable for chemical melting agents and plows.

Please remember if you HAVE to be out on the roads SLOW DOWN, SLOW DOWN, and SLOW DOWN!! The majority of today’s calls for service were due to drivers traveling too fast for road conditions.
