Email and Web Body

The current snowfall has caused perilous travel conditions for west central Indiana. All roadways are snow covered slick and hazardous. Interstate 70 is currently the main trouble area with multiple slide-offs and vehicle crashes. Traffic on I-70 is moving slowly, motorists should use caution. Another trouble area with multiple slide-offs is State Road 63 in northern Vigo County and all of Vermillion County.

From 6:00am until 12:30pm today, Putnamville troopers have responded to 26 vehicles slide-offs and 5 vehicle crashes, which include three jack-knife tractor-trailers. Troopers transported a number of motorists stranded along Interstate 70 to local motels. Putnamville District has dramatically increased patrols over the next 48-hours by cancelling troopers days off and by utilizing administrative enforcement personnel.

The Putnamville District is not aware of any major road closings. Motorists are strongly urged to travel only if necessary.

The National Weather Service is predicting another 4-8” of new snow throughout the day and they say the snow could be heavy at times with temperature falling to around 11 degrees by 5 p.m., wind chill values as low as -9 degrees. Blustery, with a north wind 10 to 15 mph increasing to 20 to 25 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph. A wind chill warning with a prolonged period of dangerously cold wind chills is likely tonight through Tuesday morning with the most extreme wind chills are likely to be late tonight through Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning. A prolonged period of wind chills lower than 30 below zero is predicted with wind chills of 40-50 below zero late tonight through Tuesday morning. The Indiana State Police are asking if you have plans to go out in the next 24-48 hours please rethink your trip. While the Indiana Department of Transportation has been working tirelessly and non-stop throughout this period road conditions can deteriorate rapidly with the ever changing weather and wind.
