[ATG] AG Zoeller: Time for Congress to fulfill responsibility on immigration
Start Date: 4/18/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 4/18/2013End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller was in Washington D.C. today to attend a press conference where a bipartisan group of U.S. Senators announced a federal immigration reform proposal.

As lawyer for state government, Attorney General Zoeller handled the legal defense of a state-level immigration law in federal court until the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated such statutes.  Zoeller in 2011 also was among the civic, business and government leaders who signed the Indiana Compact that called upon the federal government to step up and fulfill its responsibility under the Constitution to enforce the nation’s immigration laws.

In his capacity representing law enforcement, Zoeller was one of the guests invited to attend a press conference held today at the Dirksen Senate Office Building where a group of U.S. Senators known as the “Gang of Eight” unveiled their immigration reform legislation.

“For years we have called upon Congress and the executive branch to fulfill their responsibility in securing the nation’s borders and enacting and enforcing immigration policy.  State governments and our law enforcement officers have been put in an untenable position caused by this failure of the federal government.  It is up to Congress to debate the details of the policy proposal, but I am encouraged to see a bipartisan effort that is supported by both labor and business.  Hopefully the legal authority of state governments and law enforcement will be protected, consistent with public safety,” Zoeller said after the press conference.

Attorney General Zoeller was one of a bipartisan group of 36 state and territorial attorneys general who signed an April 15 letter to the leaders of Congress of both houses and both parties, urging them to make reform of the federal immigration system a priority.  The letter, circulated by the National Association of Attorneys General or NAAG, is attached.
