Entry Description

STATEHOUSE - The students of Metropolitan High School along with Bill Farrar, founder of Fountains of Hop, were honored at the Statehouse with House Resolution 56 authored by Indiana House Speaker Brian C. Bosma (R-Indianapolis).

Fountains of Hope was founded in July of 2009 by Bill Farrar and is a ministry dedicated to providing safe water to people in times of disaster. The organization began its work shortly after a cholera outbreak plagued Haitians following a major earthquake. In order to combat cholera, clean water was needed. Fountains of Hope was able to install 70 water purifying systems throughout Haiti on their mission trips.

“I am proud of the Hope group from Metropolitan High School. They were instrumental in addressing social justice issues in Haiti by providing safe water for two orphanages in addition to providing health and hygiene education to the women and children in these orphanages,” said Farrar.

Bill Farrar learned about the water purifier system after Hurricane Katrina, since then he has installed over 100 water purifiers worldwide. The water purifier only requires a cup of salt, 12 volt battery and water. Through electrolysis, a gaseous form of chlorine makes the water safe to drink. Ultimately the purifier can disinfect 3,600 gallons per hour through this system.

Speaker Bosma is aware of the work that Bill has led first hand. The Speaker completed two mission trips to Haiti and worked with Fountains of Hope in two separate water projects, one in Chambrun and the second in a cholera infested mountain village of Haiti where he helped to rebuild the crumbled infrastructure and provide assistance to area medical clinics.

“I am pleased to hear that Fountains of Hope plans to continue working in Haiti and other countries in need,” said Speaker Bosma. “They have scheduled eight trips to visit and install water purification systems in Haiti this year, and also have plans to educate local children in personal health and hygiene. These are abilities that we take for granted and it will benefit them for the rest of their lives.”

Fountains of Hope has installed water purification systems not only in Haiti, but have also provided help in India, Villahermosa, Kenya, and Mexico.

“It’s a blessing. This isn’t a job – this is a blessing. I love what I do, and I love the people who volunteer for our organization,” said Bill Farrar.
