Entry Description
INDIANAPOLIS—The Indiana Senate recently passed a measure sponsored by State Senator Jim Arnold (D-LaPorte) to improve safety and ensure protection for police officers in Indiana.

“This bill gives communities the tools to become more informed during incidents involving our police officers,” Sen. Arnold said. “By keeping the public more informed, locals can pull together to help protect those who serve our cities and towns.”

House Bill (HB) 1151 would create a Blue Alert program for officers who are killed, hurt or missing in the line of duty. The Blue Alert program allows participating television and radio stations to broadcast and transmit information to the public about officers in danger. Electronic billboard operators may also volunteer their services.

Under HB 1151, the Indiana State Police (ISP) would be required to determine the area boundaries for the alert, as well as implement guidelines for receiving and verifying information, and use of the broadcasts.

Currently, ISP operates a Silver Alert program, which broadcasts information about missing and endangered adults. Issued Blue Alerts would also be reported to the National Crime Information Center data base.

HB 1151 unanimously passed out of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security, Transportation and Veteran Affairs and the full Senate by a vote of 47-0. The bill will now return to the House of Representatives where the author of the bill will have the opportunity to consider changes made in the Senate.

Sen. Arnold represents District 8 in the Indiana State Senate which encompasses the majority of LaPorte County including the City of LaPorte and the eastern part of Michigan City. It also includes western St. Joseph County and Davis, Oregon, Washington, Center and Jackson townships in Starke County.
