[s39] COLUMN by State Sen. John Waterman: General Assembly Past Halfway Point, Stay Involved With Legislative Process
Start Date: 3/7/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 3/7/2013End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description

Indiana lawmakers are past the halfway point of the 2013 legislative session. The bills that passed the Senate during the first half of session have been sent to the House of Representatives for consideration, and likewise, the Senate has received bills from the House.

My colleagues and I will be hearing several important bills during the second half of session, including the budget proposal that will fund state services for the next two years. We will also consider bills to reform Indiana’s system of criminal sentencing to make sure punishments align with the crimes committed, as well as initiatives to improve jobs training and workforce development in Indiana. As senators discuss these issues, I encourage you to participate in the lawmaking process.

To get involved, I invite you and your family to visit me at the Senate. You may observe the full Senate in session Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning most days at 1:30 p.m. Legislative committees meet Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and all day on Wednesdays. These committee hearings are open to the public or can be viewed live online at the Indiana General Assembly’s website: in.gov/legislative. The Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee meets most Monday mornings, the Corrections & Criminal Law Committee meets most Tuesdays and the Public Policy Committee meets most Wednesdays. I serve on each of these committees, and public testimony is welcome.

If you know a middle or high school student, he or she may have an interest in serving as a Senate page for a day. The one-day page program gives students the opportunity to experience the legislative process up-close, assist me and my staff, tour the Capitol and listen to floor debate. Students may apply online or send me a letter expressing an interest in the page program.

Another way to keep up on Statehouse issues is to sign up for my e-newsletters. During session, I send out a weekly email update on key state and local initiatives that are moving through the legislative process. To sign up for these e-newsletters, go to my website at in.gov/Senator.Waterman or send your email address to me at Senator.Waterman@iga.in.gov. This is a great way to stay informed and share your thoughts on issues facing our community and state. You can also reach me by calling 800-382-9467 or send letters to: State Sen. John Waterman, 200 W. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46202.

In addition to subscribing to my e-newsletters, you can also follow @INSenateGOP on Twitter and ‘like’ Indiana Senate GOP on Facebook as another easy way to stay involved in the process. An informed and active public make for a more effective legislative session.

I look forward to the second half of session and hearing your opinions in the coming months.
