Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (Feb. 20, 2013) – Legislation authored by State Sen. Sue Glick (R-LaGrange) to assist college-bound veterans passed through the Senate Committee on Education and Career Development today by a unanimous vote.

Senate Bill 115 would require colleges and universities with at least 200 veteran students to establish a “combat to college” program, creating administrative and educational assistance for these students.

“Hearing testimony in committee from both veterans and non-veterans demonstrated how much support there is for this bill,” Glick said. “The ‘combat to college’ program will ease the transition process for recent veterans seeking postsecondary education and set them up for success in the workforce. For all that veterans have sacrificed for our country, we must do all we can to help these men and women establish a solid educational foundation.”

Under SB 115, state colleges and universities would be required to implement the following policies for veterans:

  • A centralized location for admissions, registration and financial administration services.
  • Reasonable fitness accommodations for disabled veterans.
  • Academic guidance and counseling services.
  • Postsecondary credit for military training.

SB 115 now moves to the full Senate for further consideration.
