Improving Indiana’s Sex Offender Registry

STATEHOUSE— Rep. Greg Steuerwald (R-Avon) is pleased to see House Bill 1053 pass with bipartisan support through the Indiana House with a vote of 91-00.  HB 1053 will help clean up Indiana’s current sex offender registry and require offenders to update any changes to their personal information and physical appearance within 72 hours.

Our current sex offender registry needs to be updated so it contains valid information about offenders,” said Rep. Steuerwald. “The new legislation will require the Department of Correction to keep the registry current within 72 hours of informational changes which will help keep better tabs on these offenders.”

Currently, a sex offender registrant is required to update a photograph of themselves, along with their home address during their yearly registration. Although offenders are required to update their information, a person’s physical appearance can change dramatically in a year.  HB 1053 will help keep the public informed and updated much sooner on any changes to an offender’s physical appearance and personal information.

The bill requires a sexual offender to inform their local police department within 72 hours if their address, vehicle information, and/or any material change take place.  Those who fail to comply with the added information requirements of vehicle information would commit either a Class D felony as a first time offense or Class C felony if they have a prior offense.

“It is imperative we provide Hoosiers with an updated and accurate list to help keep families informed and safe. Hoosier safety must be our top priority and legislation we have proposed this session will help ensure that Indiana is a state that protects its citizens.” said Rep. Steuerwald.
