[ISDA] Today Governor Pence Signs FFA Week Proclamation

Entry Description
Today Governor Mike Pence and Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann joined in the Indiana kickoff celebration of National FFA Week February 16-23, 2013. The Governor and Lt. Governor met for a brief meeting and photo opportunity with the Indiana FFA Officers and members for FFA Page Day.

In addition, Governor Pence presented the FFA member present with the 2013 FFA Week Proclamation for Indiana.

The Proclamation reads as follows:
Whereas, FFA and agricultural education provide a strong foundation for the youth of America and the future of the food, fiber and natural resources systems: and

Whereas, FFA promotes premier leadership, personal growth and career success among its members; and

Whereas, agricultural education and FFA ensure a steady supply of young professionals to meet the growing demands in the science, business and technology of agriculture; and

Whereas, the FFA motto – “learning to do, doing to learn, earning a to live, living to serve” – gives direction of purpose to these students who take an active roles in succeeding in agricultural education; and

Whereas, FFA promotes citizenship, volunteerism, patriotism and cooperation.

Therefore, I, Michael Richard Pence, Governor of the State of Indiana, do hereby designate February 16 – 23, 2013 as FFA Week in the state of Indiana and invite all citizens to duly note this occasion.

The Indiana FFA state officers and members also participated in the Indiana House Page Program and the Indiana Senate Page Program which allowed them a first-hand view of the legislative process. Additional FFA activitvies this week include The Molly Gibson Memorial Breakfast at Franklin Community High school, the Westview FFA Blood Drive, Triton Central Salvation Army Day, and the Caston FFA Community Hog Roast. With an emphasis on serving and fellowship, many FFA chapters participate in local community activities. (for additional information, please see below).

The Indiana FFA Executive Leadership is housed under ISDA and the agricultural curriculum and education aspects are under the Department of Education. This arrangement allows agriculture teachers to have a direct link to ISDA.


Additional Indiana FFA Week Activities

The following are a sampling of additional FFA activities across Indiana to celebrate National FFA Week. The emphasis is on serving and fellowship.

Thursday, February 21

6-8 am Molly Gibson Memorial Breakfast
The FFA Chapter at Franklin Community High School continues to sponsor and support the Molly Gibson Memorial Breakfast to benefit the children at the Johnson Memorial Hospital. This annual Breakfast honors the memory of Molly Gibson, a FFA student member, who exemplified excellence on behalf of the organization but lost her life in a car accident in 1998.

All Day Westview FFA Blood Drive
The Westview FFA Chapter, in conjunction with the LaGrange chapter of the American Red Cross, will host a blood drive in the Westview high school gymnasium. Students and staff are encouraged to participate as well as first time donors. The goal is to receive 60 units of blood.

Friday, February 22

8:30 am-2:30 pm Triton Central Salvation Army Day
The Triton Central FFA Chapter will spend the day serving at the Salvation Army. Activities will include fixing meals for the elderly, cleaning up around the building and help as needed.

11 am – 1 pm Caston FFA Community Hog Roast
FFA Members will roast 4 hogs for their Community Hog Roast! Also, with the assistance of their school cafeteria, they will have baked beans, apple Sauce, cole slaw, chips and pie for the Community to enjoy. The Hog Roast is a free will donation and the money raised helps FFA Member attend various leadership workshops, the FFA State and National Convention and numerous other activities.

National FFA Week is sponsored by Tractor Supply Company and Carhart as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. The Foundation is the fundraising arm of the National FFA and supports programs by working with sponsors to raise funds for scholarships that are awarded to outstanding members.
