Entry Description INDIANAPOLIS—The Senate approved a proposal from State Senator Lindel Hume (D-Princeton) that would allow school corporations to pay for certain contracted services through their Capital Projects Funds
“By giving schools the flexibility to pay for these services through their Capital Projects Funds, we can free up resources from their General Funds to go toward education for our children,” Sen. Hume said. “Schools can also use that money for security services in order to make sure our children are safe and protected.”
Senate Bill (SB) 291 provides that capital funds may be used for security, trash and snow removal, pest control, and mowing and lawn services. Currently, school corporations use General Fund dollars to pay for these services, and Capital Project Funds only apply to certain services, such as maintenance, repairing and remodeling, and technology. Providing schools this flexibility will not cause an increase in local property taxes.
After unanimously passing out of the Senate Appropriations Committee, SB 291 was approved by the full Senate with a vote of 48-1 and now moves to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
Sen. Hume represents Indiana Senate District 48 which includes all or portions of Dubois, Gibson, Knox, Pike, Spencer and Warrick Counties. For more information on Sen. Hume his legislative agenda or other State Senate business call 1-800-382-9467 or visit www.IN.gov/S48.
