Entry Description
STATEHOUSE (Feb. 12, 2013) — The Indiana Senate today unanimously approved State Sen. John Waterman’s (R-Shelburn) bill to strengthen Indiana’s human trafficking laws by a vote of 49-0.
Senate Bill 509 would make it a crime to arrange for anyone 18 years of age or younger to participate in any sexual act or forced labor. Currently, this protection extends only to children 16-years-old or younger and does not cover unlawful performances of a sexual nature.
“During my time serving as Sullivan County Sherriff, I witnessed firsthand the horrific nature of these crimes and the effects the victims carry with them for the rest of their lives,” Waterman said. “Our state must take every action possible to crack down on human trafficking and make sure law enforcement officials have the tools to hold these criminals accountable.”
SB 509 now moves to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
